Hysterectomy is not a cure for Endometriosis

Hysterectomy is not a cure for Endometriosis yet so many women are led to believe that it is. Unfortunately media and many medical practitioners still believe this outdated theory (along with many other myths).

Endometriosis is a tenacious disease that can still remain even once the uterus and ovaries are removed. For accurate medical information on the disease go to the Endometriosis Australia  website.

For me I had a complete hysterectomy several years ago and now the disease has returned, creating it’s own hormone source.

Having a hysterectomy has cured the Adenomyosis (which is similar to Endometriosis but where disease is in the wall of the uterus), reduced pain and symptoms and gave relief from the disease for some time. However slowly the disease has returned along with pain and symptoms.

There are treatment options both surgical and non surgical that will hopefully alleviate the pain but it is important for those considering a hysterectomy to weigh their options and go in with their eyes wide open when contemplating this surgery.  Understand that it may resolve some of your issues but it is not a guarantee that you will be disease and pain free.

Make sure you talk it through with your doctor, understand what it means for you long term and have a plan in place for managing the disease.

Remember Hysterectomy is NOT a cure for Endometriosis.
